To help airlines follow the requirements specified in Resolution 753, Longest Chance in collaboration with IATA developed a common-use Hand to Hand RFID Baggage Tracking System for airlines and airports that was approved by IATA in 2016.

Hand to Hand RFID Baggage Tracking System (HHRBTS) is fully compliant with IATA Resolution 753, ISO18000-6C standard and the application protocol EPC GEN-2 uses the ISO/IEC 15961 & 15962, IATA Recommended Practice RP1740c, IATA Recommended Practice RP1745, and as such will be compatible with any other RFID systems used by other carriers or airports adhering to IATA industry standards. This means that not only HHRBTS can read RFID from other carriers, but also that HHRBTS tags can be read by other systems utilized by other air carriers.

Many years have passed by since the first waves of introducing RFID technology to the air industry.

A lot of changes happened. Airlines have long found RFID too pricey, but the cost has dropped significantly. Currently McCarran International Airport in Las Vegas pays only 12 cents for each RFID tag, down from 21.5 cents a decade ago. Traditional, paper bag tags cost the airport 3 cents. Now, the bag tags with embedded RFID inlay cost less than 10 cents each, including the cost of RFID inlay as low as 3.5 cents.

The cost of a bag tag consists of the cost of a regular paper bag tag and the cost of an RFID inlay. With the matter of time the costs of RFID inlays decreased dramatically. And further reduction continues. This attracts attention to RFID based solutions as airlines and airports can afford such investments these days.

Continuing successful business cases for RFID applications after retail and logistics, the air industry has its own pioneers and enthusiasts, such as Delta Airlines, Qantas, and the airports, such as Hong Kong International Airport, Las Vegas McCarran.

RFID Helps Milano Malpensa Airport to Complete Maintenance Work On Time

To make its repair and cleaning operations more efficient, the airport installed 50,000 tags to equipment and other objects, and issued RFID-enabled phones to all its maintenance workers.

By applying Near Field Communication (NFC) tags to tens of thousands of items, and by equipping maintenance workers with NFC mobile phones, Italy’s Milano Malpensa Airport reports that it has made the maintenance and repair of its facilities and equipment faster and more efficient. The airport installed the RFID-based solution to manage maintenance throughout its facility in 2012. Since then, says Stefano Dolci, Milano Malpensa’s senior project leader, the airport automatically knows of every repair or maintenance request received—for everything from a lighting unit to an aircraft-boarding bridge—as well as its status at any given moment.

The solution, known as CAM (an acronym for Controllo delle Attività Manutentive, which translates to Maintenance Activities Control) was provided by RFID360, which supplied the airport with tags, as well as software to manage the collected read data. Since the deployment began a year ago, Malpensa has attached a total of 50,000 passive NFC RFID tags—one for every object or area that requires servicing, including fire extinguishers, electrical panels, bathrooms, moving walkways and elevators.

Delta Airlines is rolling out Radio Frequency Identification

If an airline has ever lost your luggage then you will understand how frustrating it is.

But a $50million (£34.2million) innovation introduced by Delta Airlines on Friday means that you will be able to track your bags through an app on your phone.

The Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology will replace the existing barcode and hand scanning procedure that’s been used industry-wide since the early 90s and is the first time that the technology has been used this way in the USA.
