Beijing Gives an Early Peak at Its New Mega-Airport Due to Open in 2019

(BEIJING) — China’s capital unveiled the “shining example” of its 80 billion yuan ($12.14 billion) new airport on Monday, tipped to become one of the world’s largest when it opens in October 2019 amid a massive infrastructure drive overseen by President Xi Jinping.

Representatives showed off the sprawling skeleton of “Beijing New Airport”, which is made up of 1.6 million cubic metres of concrete, 52,000 tonnes of steel and spans a total 47 sq km (18 sq miles), including runways.

It is expected to serve an initial 45 million passengers a year with an eventual capacity of 100 million, putting it on par with Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

“Lined up together there’s roughly 5 km of gates,” said project spokesman Zhu Wenxin. “It’s a shining example of China’s national production capacity.”

Updates on the airport come as the ruling Communist Party is set to open its 19th congress later this week, a twice-a-decade leadership event where Xi will consolidate power and emphasise successful projects and policy from his first five years.

The project, which broke ground in 2014, is one of the region’s largest infrastructure investments under Xi’s rule, which has been plagued by fears of slowing economic growth, offset slightly by a construction spree.

China has sought to boost its profile as both an aviation hub and a manufacturer in recent years. The country’s first home-grown passenger jet, the C919, lifted off on its maiden flight in May, edging into a multibillion-dollar market currently dominated byBoeing Co (BA, -0.39%) and Airbus SE airbus-group-n-v .

Situated 67 km south of Beijing, the airport technically falls in neighbouring Hebei province, though it will eventually constitute its own development zone.

It will relieve pressure on Beijing’s existing international airport, to the northeast of Beijing and currently the world’s second largest by passenger volume, which opened a new terminal worth $3.6 billion in 2008 ahead of the Beijing Summer Olympics.

Take a tour of new terminal planned if Heathrow Airport gets third runway

Grimshaw – the architectural firm behind the Eden Project – has won the contest to design an expanded Heathrow – if the airport gets chosen

This video shows how a new three-runway Heathrow would look, after a designer for the airport’s potential expansion was chosen.

The architectural practice Grimshaw fought off competition from the likes of Zaha Hadid, who designed the aquatics centre for the London Olympics, to be appointed “concept designer” for an extended Heathrow.

Its winning vision for Heathrow‘s new Central Terminal Area features a sweeping skylight pouring natural light onto a plain, monochrome interior with a curved shop-lined balcony.

The airport, which is competing with Gatwick for the go-ahead to build a new runway, says the decision sends a “clear signal” to the government that it is ready to push ahead should it be chosen.

It praised Grimshaw’s “visionary” concept designs, which it says “pushed the boundary of what an airport could be” and did so in a sustainable and affordable way.

Grimshaw’s plans for an expanded Heathrow

Heathrow’s head of design Barry Weekes said: “We look forward to working with Grimshaw to develop their bold ideas so that once the government approves the Heathrow expansion, we can create a world-class sustainable hub airport which delivers for our passengers, our airlines and also helps to integrate Heathrow with our local communities.

“With the Concept Architect and Programme Client Partners now in place, we are now ready to begin the process of expansion once the Government makes the right choice for the whole of Britain.”

Grimshaw was founded in the UK by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw. Its previous projects include the Eden Project in Cornwall, the Grand Stand at Lord’s cricket ground and the No 1 Court at Wimbledon.

Heathrow is now second favourite with some bookies to get the extra runway, with one bookmaker offering odds of 4/7 on for Gatwick to get the go-ahead.

Heathrow said Grimshaw’s designs ‘pushed the boundary of what an airport could be’

Then transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said following the EU referendum that there was unlikely to be any announcement before October.

But there has been speculation that new prime minister Theresa May, whose cabinet features several MPs opposed to Heathrow expansion , might make a decision sooner.
