Travellers at Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) may soon hand their checked bags to a robot rather than a baggage attendant.

The airport is testing autonomous robot vehicles in its international terminal to assist passengers who recheck bags after clearing customs and security when making connections to domestic flights.

The FLEET vehicles developed by the Dutch technology firm Vanderlande can handle about 450 bags per hour.

Connecting passenger place their rechecked bags on the vehicles, which then transport the luggage to the baggage belts. Travellers will use a touch screen to identify their airline in order to determine where to drop their bags; DFW will deploy four FLEET vehicles as part of the test project.

“As we go through the pilot programme, DFW will evaluate this new technology and assess potential applications of robots and autonomous vehicles at different points within the airport,” said Khaled Naja, DFW’s executive vice president of infrastructure and development.

“This particular application is both exciting and challenging for us, because FLEET will be working in a passenger area,” said Andrew Manship, Vanderlande’s executive vice president for airports.

The Dallas Observer reports that the FLEET technology was first tested at Rotterdam The Hague Airport in 2018, and that human baggage attendants will remain on duty in the DFW rechecked baggage area to assist travellers.

A new baggage handling system at Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport, Terminal 2E saw the beginning of operations in May 2018. Airport operator Groupe ADP’s project scope was to create an automated sortation system that collected the baggage from the six eastern check-in groups in Terminal 2E for transport to Satellite 3 via a 500-metre tunnel. In an interview for International Airport Review, Nadine Vennat, Groupe ADP Project Manager, explains how the new baggage handling system (BHS) came about.

The CrisBag® System

The project, called TDS3, had two purposes: to reduce departure baggage handling time from 60 to 22 minutes, and to increase the capacity of the automated sortation process in the hub. By automating the process, the bags are no longer collected and manually handled airside before being taken to the aircraft but are transported at high speed in the underground networks.

Nadine Vennat, Groupe ADP Project Manager, explains the need for the new BHS system: “The BHS was considered critical for the development of hub operations of the SKYTEAM Alliance, as it will complete the systems at Paris Charles de Gaulle, including Terminal 2E check-in and eventually transfers from Terminal 2F. The design had to fulfil the demanding operational performance needs required by SKYTEAM, with a short baggage travel time and high level of system availability from day one of operations and through the entire life of the system. To ensure the compliance with end-user requirements, regular meetings were held during the entire design phase with Air France.” 

The implementation works had to ensure the continuity of operations during every phase of construction.

BEUMER Group’s tote-based CrisBag^® system was selected by Groupe ADP following a tender process under which potential suppliers could submit a system design and BHS technology of their choice to meet the issued functional and performance requirements. Groupe ADP aims to minimise the impact of its operations on the environment and five per cent of the overall score included in the tender was related to corporate social responsibility criteria. The contract also included maintenance services for six years to enable the evaluation of total costs in a comprehensive and balanced manner over the whole life of the system.

Nadine explains some factors that informed the choice of the BEUMER system: “For Groupe ADP, the main benefit of a tote-based solution is that bags can be transported over long distances at high speed. With the TDS3 system being installed underground and between buildings approximately one kilometre apart, this resulted in substantial savings in baggage transport time.”

The BHS was chosen based on technical and financial criteria. ADP’s global internal expertise was of great benefit as engineers from Groupe ADP and ADP International sat down to share experiences with BEUMER engineers to achieve a modern BHS that would meet the expected KPIs set for the project. “In addition, before the system was commissioned there were a number of sessions between BEUMER and the operators in charge of technical control to ensure that the standardised tools and controls were adjusted to fit the Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport environment,” she continues.

Several extensive technical performance and operating tests were carried out over the two months before the commencement of operations. “The first tests were aimed at demonstrating the system flows, capacities and baggage travel times at several critical points,” explains Nadine. “This included the manual encoding stations, EDS line and baggage discharge processes. After that, we tested routing and the fall-back mode, where we forced communication failures between the IT systems, power failures and so on, to ensure that we could cope with every possible scenario that might interrupt operations.

can’t understand why robots — like the ones used by Amazon.com Inc.’s warehouses — aren’t handling airport baggage yet.

Outlining what automation, artificial intelligence and big data can do for air travel, the carrier’s President Tim Clark laid out a vision in which robots, with no need for human intervention, would ID bags, put them in prescribed bins and later take them out of the aircraft. His concept also includes cutting back on what is still the most laborious part of flying — the central security search.

“That’s in today’s technology,” he told reporters in Sydney on Tuesday at the International Air Transport Association’s annual general meeting. “We can actually do this.” The entire process, from arrival at the airport, check-in, immigration through all the way to the boarding gates, would become seamless and uninterrupted, he said.

The technology can be deployed even for security searches, said Clark, 68, adding a passenger passing through the system would keep walking while being inspected by “lots of entities.”

If there’s a problem, “something will come out — I can’t say whether it’ll be humanoid or whatever — and stop him.”

Emirates is already close to producing a walk-though security system that doesn’t require passengers to remove boots and belts and offload mobile phones and keys.

The construction of the new Al Maktoum International Airport south of Dubai, which Clark says was designed with “old think,” has been paused so its architecture can be reworked to accommodate new technologies and the internet of things.

“If it means we delay a couple years, we have to do that,” Clark said. “Those that don’t do it are going to be problem children in the future.”

DALLAS—The Transportation Security Administration is now using robotic carts at Dallas Love Field to make screening suspicious bags more efficient.
According to the TSA’s website, 1.3 million checked bags are screened across the country each day.
Officers inspect those bags because something inside triggered an alarm during initial scans.

At Dallas Love Field, if a bag triggers an alarm—it gets to meet some new artificial intelligence.

Since November, TSA officers have been utilizing robotic tables (mobile inspection tables) to help them screen and inspect luggage.

The tables move on a magnetic track and take suspicious bags to stations where officers are standing, so they can be searched for any illegal items.

Once a bag clears inspection or prohibited items are removed, it’s put back on the robotic table which then dumps the bag back onto a conveyor belt that leads to its plane.

Before, officers would just yank suspicious bags off of those belts. With the new robots, the TSA says work injuries may be a thing of the past.

“You can imagine working a shift down here would be very exhausting,” Assistant Federal Security Director of Screening Jeffrey Tyler said.

“We’re not lifting, pushing, or even pulling the bag.”

Tyler said that the robotic tables also cut down on luggage backups during heavy travel days, putting the bags in a queue instead of forcing officers to just deal with them as they come.

He said that the system was initially implemented before Thanksgiving and Christmas of last year and was a major help.

“It gives us plenty of time and opportunity to clear that bag efficiently and effectively—and send it on for travel,” Tyler said.

Chris Perry, Dallas Love Field’s Communications Manager, told WFAA that the airport deals with 15,000 to 16,000 bookings a day.

It’s the first airport to use this kind of automation to screen all checked bags.

Detroit Metropolitan Airport and Cleveland Hopkins International Airport use the robotic tables too, but not for all terminals.

“If we can get those bags through safely and efficiently, we’re always happy to do that,” Perry said.

To be able to say that we have robots moving bags around, that’s the fun part for us.”

Perry couldn’t go into exact costs for the tables because he said the system was purchased as part of the Love Field Modernization Program.

He stressed that any money the airport uses comes from its enterprise fund—and not the city’s general fund.
