Heathrow will strengthen its digital services and infrastructure to create a simple process for the 300 brands to share their products with customers, leading to greater choice within the current Reserve and Collect service. To turn vision into reality, Heathrow is collaborating with some of the world’s best technology partners to deliver these innovative solutions.

London Heathrow Airport has announced that it will launch AOE’s OM3 as a significant step in transforming the airport’s digital experience. The announcement is further proof of the accelerating momentum that the OM3 suite has generated in the aviation industry, coming shortly after Auckland Airport and AOE announced a similar partnership.

OM³, or Omnichannel Multi-Merchant Marketplace, is a comprehensive suite which multi-retailer venues such as airports can use to digitalise their non-aviation revenues, thus providing their customers a unified and seamless online and offline experience.

AOE CEO Kian Gould comments: “Our OM³ Suite continues to build momentum for Heathrow and we are especially excited to be part of Heathrow Airport’s strategy to digitalise their entire business model to benefit both passengers and employees. As one of the world’s most important airports, Heathrow is at the forefront of the aviation industry, continuously innovating to improve its offering. Our goal is to be a long-term partner in this effort to enhance the passenger experience.”

Heathrow has a long-term vision for digital transformation, and AOE will provide an omnichannel platform that will integrate seamlessly with the existing infrastructure. In addition to providing a sophisticated, convenient on- and offline shopping experience, the OM³ Suite will ultimately integrate with numerous additional features including loyalty programmes, lounge access, parking and VIP services. Another feature of the platform is the capability to provide passengers with real-time information, helping make the most of their time in the terminals.

Chris Annetts, Retail and Service Proposition Director, Heathrow Airport, adds: “We have a long-term vision to deliver a seamless digital experience for all our passengers, both inside the airport and in the comfort of their homes. This partnership with AOE is the next step towards building seamless end-to-end experiences for passengers and enabling us to interact with them more efficiently for an enhanced and memorable journey.”

Mr Adventure augmented reality app launched at Heathrow Heathrow and Mr Men Little Miss have teamed up to launch Around the World with Mr. Adventure, a brand new interactive augmented reality […]

Mr Adventure augmented reality app launched at Heathrow

Heathrow and Mr Men Little Miss have teamed up to launch Around the World with Mr. Adventure, a brand new interactive augmented reality app, at Heathrow Terminal 2 to entertain children as they navigate through Heathrow’s terminals. Using any digital device, children can help the official Mr Men and Little Miss characters, Mr. Adventure and Little Miss Explorer to find five badges hidden around the terminals.

Following the arrival of Mr. Adventure last year, this summer sees Heathrow welcome new travelling friend; Little Miss Explorer

New augmented reality app launched as part of summer season, which will see over 365,000 passengers with children departing the airport

The busiest departure day so far is expected to be Friday 21th July with 131,546 passengers travelling through the airport

The digital device’s camera will identify when a child has reached each badge’s hiding place and will play a 3D animated video, enabling the child to photograph/video themselves with the characters.

Once they have found all five digital badges in the game, they can collect their own limited edition iron-on badges to keep, from information desks around the terminals. The app aims to entertain children and encourage them to start their journey of exploration before they leave the airport.

Iona Harper, Senior Experience Manager at Heathrow, said, “As summer sees a greater number of families visit Heathrow, we want to ensure they receive the best possible start to their holiday adventures. The Mr. Adventure app is a great, fun experience for Heathrow’s tiniest travellers, encouraging discovery for the next generation of explorers.”

From Thursday 13 July to Sunday 10 September, Mr. Adventure and Little Miss Explorer will also be making appearances in all terminals to chat to children and help them find the badges. In addition, Heathrow will be hosting themed craft activities and workshops; as well as handing out themed Biscuiteers biscuits and stickers, and offering Kids Eat Free menus and free play areas across terminals.

It may not signal an end to queuing at baggage reclaim carousels, but a new app designed to help manage the flow of some 100,000 pieces of luggage a day through Heathrow Airport is already having an impact behind the scenes.

The app was invented to support the international airport business by Mark Ingram, process manager at Babcock International with the support of airports director, Ben Stancliffe, who has overall responsibility for one of the fastest growing core parts of the Babcock business.

“Bad weather had caused hold-ups in the system and once again, our 30-strong control centre was receiving a large number of phone calls, texts and visits from airport staff wanting to know when normal service was going to be resumed,” says Mr Ingram.

“While we kept people informed as best we could, things happen very fast in baggage-handling and the information we gave them was quickly out of date.”

He adds: “I knew that there must be a more efficient way of keeping our key stakeholders informed when there were delays in the system and 15 months on, this is the result.”

Christened the “Operational Reporting Systems” or ORS, the technology behind the app neatly replaces calls and texts with a smartphone app offering live status updates.

The simple efficiency of the new approach has already been recognised by the Airport Operators Association, which last year named Babcock Best Innovator in its annual awards scheme.

The app offers a “unique solution from concept to completion, addressing a specific airport issue [and] creating a single source of real-time information for over 100 stakeholders, which dramatically improved the efficiency of communication,” said the judging panel. It’s this type of innovation, Babcock says, that could help support other parts of its growing international airports business.

“What Heathrow passengers don’t see are the miles of moving belts in the bowels of the airport which take their luggage to various destinations around the campus,” says Mr Ingram.

“Just as a householder can use CCTV to record information from their garden, this approach allows staff to access hourly updates on baggage-handling in each area: graded on the screen as red, amber or green.”

The app, which can be accessed from anywhere in the world, includes individual reports from each airport terminal, signposts out-of-service areas and generates a daily performance report.

Additional information comes in the form of control rooms alerts, released in the event of approaching bad weather, for example.

Further refinements are now imminent, says Ben Stancliffe, with the team now looking at maximising the app’s potential in other parts of its business.

“We have replaced a lot of the ‘noise’ around baggage-handling and are now able to provide stakeholders with live information about how the system is working on the ground,” he says.

“Phase 2 will see us introduce pictures to the app and, for non-baggage experts in particular, these visual reminders of heavy snow on flight stands, say, will hopefully be worth a thousand words.”

He adds: “By concentrating on complex engineering projects like this one, we enable our clients to focus more squarely on their own areas of expertise. This app is a prime example of the Babcock approach.”

Heathrow Airport unveils new noise reduction bid to appease angry locals

Planes coming in to Heathrow are to change the way they land to cut noise for west London residents.

Pilots have been told to delay the point when they lower the wheels beneath the planes – which causes wind noise which can be heard by residents – until they are nearer the runway.

The changes will not alter the safety of the landings, an airport spokesman said. Heathrow has told airlines the wheels could be lowered 4.6 miles from the runway, rather than the current average of eight miles, without any risk.

The change is part of a plan to appease residents living near to the airport and reduce opposition to a third runway, The Times reported.

According to Heathrow’s most recent league table of the noisiest airlines, El Al is the worst followed by Kuwait Airways. British Airways’ short-haul planes were the quietest.

It is expected a new runway for either Heathrow or Gatwick will be approved within weeks by Prime Minister Theresa May.

Other measures in the ten-point plan to cut noise include encouraging more modern planes by introducing cuts in landing charges for newer aircraft, and bringing in 50 monitors to measure the noise.

Matt Gorman, the airport’s director of sustainability and environment, said there was “no single solution” but small changes can make a big difference.

GE’s Advanced Chemical Treatment Technology and Real-Time Monitoring and Data Analysis Significantly Reduced Water Usage and Increased Efficiency

Heathrow Airport Honored with a GE Ecomagination Award

The largest airport in the United Kingdom saved more than 130 million liters of water annually using GE’s advanced water treatment solutions. Thirty-nine cooling towers across four terminals at London’s Heathrow Airport were treated with GE’s corrosion inhibitor, cooling and chemical treatment technologies. After 12 months, the airport saved the equivalent of 5 percent of total site water usage and $310,000 in costs.

In recognition of its noteworthy reductions in water usage, GE honored Heathrow Airport with an Ecomaginaton award, which recognizes the achievements of industrial users for striking a positive balance between today’s environmental, industrial and sustainability challenges. It is given to the top GE customers in environmental and economic performance.

“With more than 75 million passengers per year, 80 airlines, over 76,000 employees and an average of approximately 1,300 flights per day, Heathrow Airport is one of the busiest airports in Europe, and we consume a significant volume of water,” said Chris Allen, Heathrow Airport Limited. “It is crucial we work with partners to reduce our environmental impact and are pleased that the GE technology has allowed us to exceed our environmental and industrial goals while meeting our high operational demands. We have been able to reduce our water usage and costs and improve efficiency. We are honored that GE has recognized Heathrow Airport with this award.”

The airport’s cooling towers were monitored in real time, and the data was analyzed with GE’s InSight knowledge management system and TrueSense for Cooling remote monitoring and diagnostics platforms.
This year, hosted by London Heathrow.

Described as International Airport Review’s best event yet, last year saw Airport Security co-locating with the ever successful Airport IT event in Barcelona, to create one fantastic exhibition space for security and IT professionals from airports and airlines to meet from around the world.

This year, hosted by London Heathrow, Airport Security is coming to the UK.

The global airport security market is predicted to more than double expenditure to around $45 billion by 2018 and investments in security and surveillance, access control, perimeter security, integration, cyber security and screening are top of the agenda for Heads of Security.

With heightened security checks across the globe, International Airport Review’s Airport Security conference will again bring together Security Directors, Head of Operations and Security, Lead Security Officers, Security Managers and Security Analysts to share and discuss the impact of changing security regulations as well as showcasing how they are implementing leaner, state of the art systems to increase security as well as enhancing passenger experience.

Take a tour of new terminal planned if Heathrow Airport gets third runway

Grimshaw – the architectural firm behind the Eden Project – has won the contest to design an expanded Heathrow – if the airport gets chosen

This video shows how a new three-runway Heathrow would look, after a designer for the airport’s potential expansion was chosen.

The architectural practice Grimshaw fought off competition from the likes of Zaha Hadid, who designed the aquatics centre for the London Olympics, to be appointed “concept designer” for an extended Heathrow.

Its winning vision for Heathrow‘s new Central Terminal Area features a sweeping skylight pouring natural light onto a plain, monochrome interior with a curved shop-lined balcony.

The airport, which is competing with Gatwick for the go-ahead to build a new runway, says the decision sends a “clear signal” to the government that it is ready to push ahead should it be chosen.

It praised Grimshaw’s “visionary” concept designs, which it says “pushed the boundary of what an airport could be” and did so in a sustainable and affordable way.

Grimshaw’s plans for an expanded Heathrow

Heathrow’s head of design Barry Weekes said: “We look forward to working with Grimshaw to develop their bold ideas so that once the government approves the Heathrow expansion, we can create a world-class sustainable hub airport which delivers for our passengers, our airlines and also helps to integrate Heathrow with our local communities.

“With the Concept Architect and Programme Client Partners now in place, we are now ready to begin the process of expansion once the Government makes the right choice for the whole of Britain.”

Grimshaw was founded in the UK by Sir Nicholas Grimshaw. Its previous projects include the Eden Project in Cornwall, the Grand Stand at Lord’s cricket ground and the No 1 Court at Wimbledon.

Heathrow is now second favourite with some bookies to get the extra runway, with one bookmaker offering odds of 4/7 on for Gatwick to get the go-ahead.

Heathrow said Grimshaw’s designs ‘pushed the boundary of what an airport could be’

Then transport secretary Patrick McLoughlin said following the EU referendum that there was unlikely to be any announcement before October.

But there has been speculation that new prime minister Theresa May, whose cabinet features several MPs opposed to Heathrow expansion , might make a decision sooner.
