The business potential of self-connectivity.

One of the strategies that air travellers use to save some money is to self-connect, i.e. travelling with a combination of tickets where the airlines involved do not handle the transfer themselves.

Thus, self-connecting passengers need to carry their own baggage between flights and face the risk of missing their onward connection if the first flight is delayed.

Both airports and airlines, particularly low-cost carriers, have recently started catering to the needs of this type of passengers. Some airports, with the help of third-party companies, have introduced self-connection platforms that facilitate the transfer, and cover the costs of connecting the bags and the risks of missing the flights (e.g., Gatwick Connect and ViaMilano).

From the airline perspective, some low-cost carriers have gone through a process of ‘hybridisation’ and started offering transfers between their flights, for example, Vueling or Norwegian. It has also been reported that Ryanair will be testing passenger connections this summer 2016 in its bases of London Stansted and Barcelona airports.
