<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Evobot industrial AMR (Autonomous Mobile Robot) robot allows the movement of heavy loads up to 2000 kg (towing and lifting) thanks to an on-board navigation system.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is provided with a complete natural navigation solution which calculates the position of the vehicle (location), controls its movement and can be interfaced directly with the vehicle&#8217;s safety laser scanners allowing:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>a simple and reliable localization</li>



<li>an optimal control of the vehicle</li>



<li>a total security of robot movements</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To guarantee a natural cohabitation between the EVOBOT robot and humans, the signaling of movements has been particularly studied:</p>



<ul class="wp-block-list">
<li>a set of LEDs signaling start-up and movements of the robot,</li>



<li>a bluespot at the front and rear signaling the arrival of the vehicle even at a blind angle by projecting a blue spot on the ground,</li>



<li>an audible signal can be programmed in a sensitive area.</li>
</ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Evobot mobile robot is supplied with a feeding station allowing the robot to charge automatically and frequently. This task can be carried out between each mission or at the end of the exercise. The action can be triggered by an operator or carried out automatically by the robot (defined beforehand).</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is available in different configurations by adding additional equipment (lifter, cobot, conveyors, etc.).</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Electric vehicles are slowly catching up with combustion-engined cars, which explains why EV charging stations are already being built all over the US. Airports are starting to adapt to the EV industry as well as they add autonomous robots that can charge your EV right where you parked.</p>

<h2 class="wp-block-heading">ZiGGY the EV Charger</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The advanced mobile EV charging robot will be placed in airports in the US, with the Dallas Forth Worth (DFW) International Airport being the first to soon have them. This allows for a more convenient way for EV owners to charge their vehicles while on a flight.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Through the EV charger&#8217;s phone app, drivers can book a robot for them to use, which will then guide them to the parking spot they selected. As they head to the marked location, the robot will also save the parking space for the user to keep it from being occupied.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It will do so by rolling through to the spot reserved and waiting for the driver to arrive. Once the driver is near the booked space, the ZiGGY robot will simply roll out so the EV could take its place, and the EV charger would position itself behind the car.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Once the driver has parked, they would then have to confirm the activation. Based on the demonstration video, it can be done through a QR code. Once that&#8217;s done, the driver can start charging, and the robot will alert them through the app once the car is fully charged.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">ZiGGY is developed by the company EV Safe Charge. Its founder and CEO Caradoc Ehrenhal stated that due to the robot&#8217;s innovative flexibility to reach every car in a parking lot, DFW chose to display the tech, as reported by&nbsp;<a href="https://interestingengineering.com/transportation/ziggy-automomous-robot-charges-your-ev" rel="noreferrer noopener" target="_blank">Interesting Engineering</a>.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">DFW Executive Vice President of Innovation, Paul Puopolo expressed that the airport is aware of EVs becoming a part of their future, and so they are finding the right technology solutions to meet the future challenges, which he stated was a major focus for their team.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Given that ZiGGY is portable, it&#8217;s likely that it or other technologies like it will be seen in other places as well aside from airports. They can be useful for parking spaces in retailers like Walmart, which already has plans to install EV charging networks in several locations.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading">Why Portable EV Chargers Might Be Better</h2>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">EV charging stations are already being set up in various locations to accommodate EV drivers who need a quick boost in the middle of a trip. However, there are parking structures that don&#8217;t have enough space for the equipment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Since a portable EV charger can just roll to the parking spot, there&#8217;s no need to worry about allotting space for the charger. A mobile robot will also solve the limitations that a stationary charging station will have.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The robot itself will return to its station once the electric vehicle has already been charged completely. This means that other EVs won&#8217;t have to wait for the vehicle parked in a charging spot to leave before they get their turn.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Healthcare professionals, researchers, and governments from across the world are struggling to contain the spread of the coronavirus, which has infected 18,486,295 people globally, and claimed more than 698,396 lives so far, according to Worldometer . While healthcare workers are at high risk of contracting COVID-19 due to their proximity to the patients, humanoid robots are replacing human beings across the world to ensure social distancing.   Invento C-Astra. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">In India too, robotics startups have risen to the occasion to help deploy robots in places like hospitals, thereby minimising human intervention and paving the way for the use of machine to carry out tasks such as sanitising hospitals and to deliver food and medicines to the infected patients.  From disinfecting floors and carrying out temperature checks, to arranging video call with doctors in case of an emergency, robots are being deployed to minimise the risk for healthcare workers. YourStory lists few such humanoid robots invented by Indian startups that are battling COVID-19. C-Astra, Mitra, and RoboDoc by Invento Robotics Bengaluru-based Invento Robotics, founded by Balaji Vishwanathan, Mahalakshmi Radhakrushnan, and Bharath Kumar in 2016, is a full-stack robotics startup that helps automate customer engagement in banks, airports, restaurants, and other places. The startup has now turned its business focus to help fight the coronavirus pandemic. In April this year, the startup launched Invento C-Astra, a robot which helps screen patients and to disinfect common areas. The autonomous mobile unit can move around lobbies, hallways, and can sanitise rooms. According to the startup, the robot makes use of disinfecting UV-C lamps to disinfect a room completely in just three to four minutes. The robot is currently being used in hotels to disinfect rooms, and is also being used at Apollo Hospitals, etc.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Its flagship robot, Mitra, which was designed for customer engagement, alerts host about the arrival of visitors. With the current COVID-19 crisis, it has been modified with the following features &#8211; scans temperatures of patients, collects necessary details of patients like their name, phone number, and picture, and even sets up a video call with the doctor for further diagnosis. “This robot takes pictures of visitors and records their body temperature. It asks them for details such as name and phone number, and validates their identity. It provides these details to the organisation the person is visiting. If the visitor fails the screening test, the robot immediately connects the visitor with telemedicine support. Doctors can talk to them directly through the robot and advise accordingly,” Balaji says.  To reduce the risk for doctors from contracting the virus, Invento Robotics has come up with another robot called RoboDoc. This can move around the hospital autonomously, and it takes doctors inside COVID wards virtually, reducing their physical movement. It also scans temperature and other vitals of patients, and collects and feeds the data (their temperature, diet, etc.,) to the computer. Apart from this, the robot can also carry load of up to two kilograms. While C-Astra and Mitra can be used in various sectors including shopping malls, metros, warehouses, etc., RoboDoc is specially designed for the healthcare sector. RoboDiCaprio, RoboJulia, RoboNano, and RoboElf by Milagrow Milagrow HumanTech, founded by Rajeev Karwal in 2007, recently launched four new humanoid robots – RoboDiCaprio, RoboJulia, RoboNano, and RoboElf.  Specially designed to cater to hotels, hospitals, restaurants, and corporate offices, these humanoids can interact with customers, perform tasks, and navigate independently.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The guest relations robot RoboDiCaprio can be used for business consulting, greeting, reservations, advertising, and patrolling. The humanoid claims to have face recognition capabilities with 98 percent accuracy, and can scan a distance of 25 m with an accuracy of 2 mm. The Serving Robot – RoboJulia is designed to deliver meals to guests, explain the menu, give restaurant information, etc. It can work universally, take fast turns, and has an emergency stop.  Similarly, RoboElf is a service assistant, which can be deployed in various locations such as metros, banks, and shopping malls. It has a business management system, which is built on a Cloud terminal that enables users to give orders or push new files to their RoboElf robots distributed around the world. RoboNano acts like a personal companion, and is equipped with Amazon’s Alexa Voice Service, smart home control, and remote surveillance capabilities. It has over 50 sensors to avoid objects in its way, recognise voices, and know when someone enters the room. Additionally, it can order pizza, request a car, track fitness stats, control the TV, and play music as well.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Earlier in April, the Delhi-based startup developed Milagrow iMap 9 and Humanoid ELF, which were being deployed by the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) for its COVID-19 wards.  Asimov Robotics Kochi-based Asimov Robotics, under the Kerala Startup Mission, developed two humanoid robots in March this year. These robots were the first in the country to raise awareness about the spread of coronavirus among people in Kerala. The robots currently distribute masks, sanitisers, and napkins in the startup complex in Kochi. In addition to this, the robots also stream videos and brief people about social distancing and other steps to be taken to prevent the spread of the virus.</p>

The thermal camera sensors will also analyse people’s body temperatures and advise those with a high temperature to consult with the health department.  Prithvi by Delhi teenagers A group of teenagers from Delhi has built a robot called Prithvi to protect healthcare workers by reducing their contact with COVID-19 patients.  Nishant Chandna (15), Saurav Maheshkar (16), and Aditya Dubey (17) devised the idea and put it into action after Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared a nationwide lockdown in March. </p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The robot allows a smart tablet to be linked to it in order to enable video conferencing between doctors and patients. The team also plans to add a temperature gun feature to the robot to further minimise contact with the patients. “About 50 to 52 cases of coronavirus in India are of doctors who were infected while treating patients. We wanted to design something that would help protect those at the frontline battling this illness. So, we put our ideas together and designed this robot,” Chandna said during a media interaction. CO-BOT and NIGA-BOT by ITI Cuttack In April, the government-run Industrial Training Institute (ITI) in Cuttack developed two low-cost robots &#8211; CO-BOT and NIGA-BOT, which can protect health workers from the coronavirus and reduce the need for personal protective equipment (PPE). In the wake of the pandemic, the institute had constituted an innovation team that developed the robots in its laboratory, in association with SAK Robotics Lab, a startup. The service robot CO-BOT can move on wheels and has a humanoid structure. Its hand-like structure can hold a tray and carry a load of up to 20 kg. It can be used in COVID-19 hospitals for carrying food, water, and medicines to and from patients. The second one, named NIGA-BOT, is a telepresence robot, which can be used for surveillance and teleconsultation by doctors who can interact with patients remotely through live video streaming.&nbsp; NIGA-BOT can be used to monitor the health of patients. “This will protect doctors and nurses from contracting the virus. All these innovations will lead to reduced need for PPE kits, and could be a saviour for health workers,” said Hrushikesh Mohanty, Principal, ITI-Cuttack. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">New contactless systems and cleaning innovations are being rolled out at Changi Airport in Singapore.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">At Changi’s automated kiosks, new proximity sensors are being installed progressively to eliminate the need for travellers to touch the electronic screens when they check in or drop off their bags.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Used for the first time in any airport, infrared sensors will enable passengers to select options and key in their travel details by pointing their finger close to the screen without touching it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">For those who need to check in at counters staffed by customer service agents, acrylic screens will provide a safe barrier between passengers and staff.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Immigration &amp; Checkpoints Authority has upgraded the automated immigration lanes at Changi Airport with a new biometric system that uses face and iris recognition technology as the primary means for identity verification. This replaces traditional fingerprint scanning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Changi Airport Group (CAG) is also doing more with technology to clean and disinfect the airport.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Autonomous cleaning robots in the terminals have been upgraded with a nozzle that sprays a light disinfecting mist for added protection on carpets and floors during cleaning.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">CAG is also testing the use of ultraviolet-C (UV-C) LEDs to disinfect the handrails of escalators and travellators in a safe way. And a trial is being conducted on the use of contactless infrared technology for passenger lifts, where travellers just need to hover their finger over the lift button to activate it.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Mr Tan Lye Teck, Changi Airport Group’s Executive Vice President for Airport Management said, “Passengers will expect airports to deliver the highest standards of safety and hygiene to give them peace of mind during their journey, and we will rapidly bring on board new measures as we go into a new normal for air travel. The improvements we announce today demonstrate CAG’s continuous commitment to passenger health and a positive airport experience. <p class="wp-block-paragraph">It is the closest airport to the capital; many local and foreign travellers choose this convenient airport.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The number of <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/travel/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visitors to Japan</a> is increasing year by year and it is expected to hit record levels when Tokyo hosts the 2020 Olympic and Paralympic games.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Airport operators are making efforts to handle the situation with the help of unexpected workers!</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">They are the robots that will be greeting, guiding and helping travellers.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We are using a total of four robots in Haneda Airport and the main concept is security but we can divide the four robots into two groups, the first group is digital signage guiding robots and the second group is autonomous security robots that can operate and move by themselves,” said Kazunori Maebashi of Tokyo Metropolitan Government.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Autonomous security and guide robot can be seen in the Airport lobby, this robot is able to stop automatically, to prevent collision and accident when it encounters people or object.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">During the day, it guides <a href="https://www.hindustantimes.com/travel/discovering-the-pink-petal-land-of-japan/story-u7XIKmKOECwXANOaar4JIP.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">visitors </a>through the airport using a touch panel located at the front. In the evening, it takes on the duties of a security guard.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It has also observation skills and intruder-detection technology.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">When it detects suspicious objects or left behind bags even under seats it automatically notifies guards.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“These robots are also crucial tools in solving the labour shortage due to population decline. It is hoped that using robots would reduce the burden of airport employees and create a better working environment,” said Maebashi.  </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The final goal is to improve the overall quality of service by finding a task that robots can do to make humans more efficient and customers more satisfied.</p>

<ul class="wp-block-list"><li>Robots are staffing airports around the world and performing such tasks as check-in, security and concierge services.</li><li>Nearly half of the world’s airlines and 32% of its airports are seeking a partner to further investigate robotics and automated vehicles in the next three years, according to the 2018 Air Transport IT Insights survey.</li><li>By 2030 robots are expected to have replaced check-in processes, according to a report published this year by UK-based inventory management company Vero Solutions.</li></ul>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Good morning. Welcome to British Airways. Where can I take you?” The crisp female voice might belong to any woman working for BA, but it’s a robot cruising around London’s Heathrow Airport. The carrier is trying out a pair of autonomous robots that can guide passengers around Terminal 5. It’s one of the latest examples of increasing automation at airports including advanced intelligent machines that interact with passengers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Terminal 5 is Heathrow’s busiest, with some 32.8 million passengers on 210,723 flights in 2018. The following year, BA installed 80 automated bag-drop machines in the facility; it also has experimented with self-driving luggage vehicles. The carrier says automation in the terminal has reduced the number of lineups and made journeys faster and smoother.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">To make the new robots more user-friendly, they’ve both been named Bill after Captain E. H. “Bill” Lawford, who flew the U.K.’s first international scheduled passenger flight, from Middlesex to Paris, in 1919.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“We are always looking for new and innovative ways to use automation to help our customers enjoy a faster and smoother journey through the airport and beyond,” says Ricardo Vidal, head of innovation at BA. “These smart robots are the latest innovation allowing us to free up our people to deal with immediate issues and offer that one-on-one service we know our customers appreciate. In the future, I envisage a fleet of robots working side-by-side with our people, offering a truly seamless travel experience.”</p>

They can also guide people to service desks, oversized luggage check-in counters, self-service check-ins, bag drops, cafes and other facilities in the terminal. The machines are based on the company’s Bo robot, which has an 11-inch display and sensors including 3D LIDAR, ultrasonic, infrared and vision. It can autonomously navigate and avoid obstacles and has a lithium-ion battery with eight hours of power on a full charge.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Automation has already significantly changed how airports function, across all areas of operation — from passenger services to luggage maneuvering, security and many more,” says Andrei Danescu, co-founder and CEO of BotsAndUs. “What we see as a key next step is actually bringing all these together so they can communicate and collaborate with each other, offering a seamless and safe experience from the car park to boarding the flight.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">British Airways just <a href="https://mediacentre.britishairways.com/pressrelease/details/86/2019-319/11921?ref=News" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">announced</a> that it plans to test AI-powered robots at London Heathrow Airport&#8217;s Terminal 5. The airline is planning to use artificial intelligence to help flyers get through the airport faster. If successful, British Airways may use AI-powered robots at many other airports in the near future.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Starting early in January, the airline will use two robots to help guide travelers through the terminal. By using robots, airline staff will be able to concentrate on helping guests with more complex and pressing problems. The robots will be able to interact in a variety of languages and answer a host of different questions, while also offering real-time flight information.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The robots will also boast geo-location technology and advanced sensors, and they will be able to scoot across the airport and take passengers to different locations such as the airline&#8217;s Special Assistance and Family Check-In zones. </p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The AI-powered robot is called Bill, as an ode to Lt E H &#8220;Bill&#8221; Lawford, who was the captain of the world&#8217;s first international service by Air Transport and Travel, British Airways&#8217; predecessor, which on August 25, 1919, flew from Middlesex to Paris.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">British Airways is using technology to improve the customer experience and is looking to use automation to improve efficiency. In the future, the airline hopes to use a fleet of robots that work side-by-side with its employees. This year, at London Heathrow&#8217;s Terminal 5, the airline installed 80 automated check-in machines as well as 80 automated bag-drop machines.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">British Airways has also invested heavily in the use of biometric technology at boarding gates, which has helped minimize boarding delays. Even though the the airline has been investing billions to improve the experience for customers on different fronts, it was recently <a href="https://news.get.com/ryanair-british-airways-ranked-among-worst-world/">voted</a> as one of the worst airlines in the world by travelers.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">It’s a vision that planners hope will become reality as new technology is rolled out, transforming the exhausting experience of getting stuck in lengthy queues in ageing, overcrowded terminals into something far more pleasant.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The Asia-Pacific has been leading the way but faces fierce competition from the Middle East as major hubs compete to attract the growing number of long-haul travellers who can choose how to route their journey.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The regions “are the two leading pockets of technology growth because they are really competing to be the global hubs for air transportation,” Seth Young, director of the Centre for Aviation Studies at Ohio State University, told AFP.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“If I’m going to fly from New York to Bangalore, do I transfer through Abu Dhabi or Dubai or do I transfer through Hong Kong? That’s a huge, huge market.”</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Facial scanning in particular is generating a lot of buzz. Changi in the affluent city-state of Singapore, regarded as among the world’s best airports, is set to roll out this biometric technology at a new terminal to open later this year.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Passengers will have their faces scanned when they first check in and at subsequent stages, theoretically allowing them to go through the whole boarding process quickly without encountering another human.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Australia announced in July an investment of A$22.5 million (US$17.5 million) to introduce face recognition technology at all the country’s international airports, while Dubai Airport is also trialling it.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Robots are appearing at some major hubs, including at Seoul’s Incheon airport, where they carry out tasks including cleaning and carrying luggage, while Changi’s new terminal will have robotic cleaners complete with butlers’ uniforms.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Self-service check-in and printing of boarding passes is already common, with many people printing their passes at home or at airport kiosks, and some hubs are now introducing self-service baggage drop points.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The service, which allows passengers to print and tag their baggage and then send it off on the conveyor belt, is available at airports including Australian hubs, Hong Kong, London Heathrow and Amsterdam’s Schiphol.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Airports are also trying to overhaul their image as dreary places that must be endured in order to get from A to B, to somewhere travellers can enjoy spending time.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Changi is building a new terminal complex called Jewel, a 10-storey development filled with shops and restaurants whose centrepiece will be a 40-metre indoor waterfall surrounded by an indoor garden.</p>

<p class="wp-block-paragraph">The complex will make the airport look more like a shopping mall than a traditional hub, and is aimed at cashing in on transiting passengers.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“They are looking at retail, non-aeronautical profits,” said Shukor Yusof, an aviation analyst from Endau Analytics.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">But while hubs in Asia-Pacific and the Middle East surge ahead, airports in the United States and Europe are being left behind.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">“Europe and the US were the leading aviation markets for the last 75 to 100 years, and it’s very difficult to revolutionise your infrastructure when you are on a foundation that is 75 years old,” said Young of the Centre for Aviation Studies.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">He added it was also a matter of “political will”, as emerging economies see building cutting-edge airports as a way of raising their status globally.<a href="http://www.scmp.com/business/article/2091180/what-will-we-do-after-robots-have-taken-over-simple-more-work">What will we do after robots have taken over? <p class="wp-block-paragraph">Some US and European airports are nevertheless trying to up their game.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">New York’s ageing airports have long been criticised as old-fashioned, cramped and dirty but JFK, the main international hub serving the city, hopes to shed its dire reputation with a proposed US$10 billion redevelopment.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Amsterdam’s Schiphol is aiming to become the world’s leading digital airport by 2019, and has been testing hand luggage scanners that allow passengers to keep liquids and laptops in their bags. It is also looking at biometric technology.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Despite the buzz surrounding new technology, there are concerns that rapid innovation could threaten long-held ways of doing business.<a href="http://www.scmp.com/business/article/2067177/robots-are-coming-they-wont-be-job-killers">The robots are coming, but they won’t be job killers</a></p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">A report from consultancy Roland Berger warned that airport revenues from retail and parking could fall by between two and four billion dollars due to the new innovations.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Automated, more predictable check-in procedures threaten retail outlets as passengers are likely to reduce the “buffer” they build in to trips to the airport, meaning less shopping time, while developments such as ride-hailing apps could undercut parking revenues, it said.</p>



<p class="wp-block-paragraph">Still, the landscape may not transform so quickly as many airports face difficulties in introducing new technology, from resistance to change to availability of financing, said Xavier Aymonod, a transport expert at Roland Berger and lead author of the report.</p>
