Dublin Airport in Ireland has installed an automatic visual docking guidance system (A-VDGS) on all aircraft contact parking stands.

A-VDGS is an electronic display that provides real-time information to pilots as they park aircraft on arrival or prepare for departure.

It is equipped with an infrared high-definition camera that scans the aircraft parking area for any possible objects that could affect the safety of the aircraft.

The camera identifies any large obstacles on the ground, such as equipment or baggage, which may block the stand and cause knock-on delays.

The airport expects the new technology to ensure faster aircraft turn-around time and improve safety.

Dublin Airport said that the deployment of the new solution saves fuel and curbs carbon emissions from the airfield as the aircraft and its support vehicles will not have their engines running unnecessarily.

Dublin Airport managing director Vincent Harrison said: “AVDGS is another example of technology enhancing airport processes that deliver huge benefits for the airport, its airline customers and passengers.

“It is a tried and trusted system of improving airport safety and efficiencies and supports Dublin Airport’s continuing drive for sustainability.”

A-VDGS will also support airline marshals who guide aircraft onto and off the parking stand. The marshal will feed key information including the aircraft type and other flight data into the AVDGS.

The system will measure aircraft clearances, stopping distances, and record the exact on and off stand times.

These recorded times are sent directly into the Airport’s Collaborative Decision Making (A-CDM) system, which focuses on aircraft turnaround times and pre-departure sequencing processes to boost air traffic flow and operational efficiency.

A-VDGS has a low visibility functionality that enables aircraft to park in extremely poor visibility conditions.

The deployment of A-VDGS is a Europe-wide initiative under the supervision of Eurocontrol, the European organisation for the safety of air navigation.

In July 2016, Dublin Airport signed a framework agreement with ADB Safegate to supply and install A-VDGS units.

Drivers park their car on a tray and a robot will automatically carry the car to an empty space.

Beijing Capital International Airport is set to start a trial of China’s first intelligent robotic parking system by the end of the month, reports Beijing News.

The system includes 132 parking spaces and eight robots. It will be a relief for drivers with poor parking skills or who are struggling to quickly find a parking space, the report said.

Drivers park their car on a tray at one of six locations inside the parking lot, and a robot will lift the tray and carry the car to an empty space. The whole process takes less than one minute.

The robots can carry up to 3.5 metric tons, said Ba Gen, the chief engineer of the Beijing Capital International Airport IT department. He said the robots produce zero emissions and can work for up to six hours on a single charge, before automatically making their way to their charging station.

Sensors enable the robots to dodge obstacles, including other robots and cars, which reduces the risk of cars getting dents or scratches from parking lot mishaps, said Ba.

When the customer wants to collect their car, they scan their parking ticket or enter their plate number using a terminal, which tells them where to go to collect their car. It takes less than two minutes for the car to be delivered.

Beijing Daxing International Airport, which is scheduled to open in September, also will deploy parking robots, according to the report.

Jaguar Land Rover and Valeo plan west of Ireland expansion for autonomous vehicle tech

Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) and Valeo, the French vehicle technology supplier, are building up a major hub in the west of Ireland for autonomous vehicle research and development. CAV Ireland (Connected and Autonomous Vehicles) is backed by the IDA and Enterprise Ireland, as well as Science Foundation Ireland, the Department of Transport, and the Lero research institute. There are plans to build up an interlinked group of companies and research centres, around Valeo’s existing operations in Tuam, Co Galway, and JLR’s new autonomous vehicle development centre at Shannon.

There are even proposals to build a major test track and proving ground facility, directly adjacent to Shannon Airport, which would allow car makers to test and develop their robotic cars before unleashing them on the roads. JLR has even earmarked a circuit of roads in Co Clare (running from Kinvarra down to Kilrush and back around).

Such development could mean a boost to employment in the area. Speaking to The Irish Times at the Electronomous car technology conference in Killarney, JLR’s John Cormican said: “We started with 12 people, we’re now up to 250. And we intend to keep expanding into the future. It’s been a great journey so far.”

Meanwhile, Valeo, the giant French vehicle technology and components supplier, confirmed at Electronomous that it intends “double-digit” hiring of artificial intelligence engineers and developers for its site in Tuam.

Pipeline of talent

Why is the west of Ireland suddenly such a hive of autonomous vehicle technology development? “We’re close to Limerick, Cork, and Galway where we’re based, and in those three cities you have three world-class universities, and three world-class technical colleges, so we have a great pipeline of talent for engineering and software. For the past 30-40 years, we’ve been exporting that talent all over the world which in some ways is great, it’s part of our DNA as a nation. But now hopefully a lot of folks will be staying home and working on tech like this here,” said Cormican. “The amount of tech companies in this country already is mind-boggling. The Dublin tech scene is pretty well known, but out west it’s really growing now. You have ourselves, General Motors, Valeo, Analogue Devices, Cisco, Ericsson, Johnson Controls and more.”

The setup includes four autonomous robots and 12 cabins for vehicle drop-off and collection. As the vehicles are deposited within a few centimeters of one another, the innovative system will enable more than 500 vehicles to be parked in P5+, a potential space saving of up to 50%.

Lyon Airport began trialling the autonomous parking system last year before deciding to scale up operations and now making the service available to the public.

Aéroports de Lyon plans to continue the development and further increase the capacity of the parking lot to eventually reach 6000 spaces in total.

To use the service, passengers simply book a parking space on the Lyon Airport website and drop-off their vehicle in the allocated cabin. They then reach the terminals via the shuttle located in the immediate vicinity. The valet robot collects the car and parks it in the secure parking lot. Upon returning from a trip the passenger recovers their available vehicle in one of the cabins.

Despite masses of complaints from the public, the Productivity Commission has defended the cost of parking at Australian airports, which often exceeds the cost of an airline ticket.

A draft report released today claims consumers place too much value on “convenience” and the cost is justified.

“Many consumers resent the price of parking at a major airport because a few hours in a short-term car park close to the terminal building can cost more than an airline ticket,” the report read.

“(Airports) are the sole provider and there are no substitutes for people who want the convenience of parking within a short walk to the terminal.

“People value the convenience of parking close to the terminal buildings. The premium that users are prepared to pay for limited space close to terminals creates locational rents.”

The high cost of parking at airports affects many Australians; we are the nation with the highest number of domestic flight seats per capita in the world.

Airport operators hold a monopoly over parking stations next to terminals, but the report notes they are likely to “face greater competitive constraints in the market for at-distance carparking, provided the operators of independent car parks have access to airport terminals for their shuttle buses”.

The report explains carpark pricing was used to “reduce congestion” at the most sought after parking spots. It said operating costs, including having CCTV cameras and “covered parking” that was “more costly to build and operate than open-air car parks”, added to the price.

The report dismisses the idea of airports exercising market power, saying the lack of market diversity is due to land being “scarce” as it’s used for other purposes including car rental businesses.

“Many consumers resent the cost of carparking at the monitored airports,” the report continued

“Carparking charges are not due to airports exercising their market power — the price of parking at-terminal can largely be explained by the value passengers place on convenience, the limited amount of land close to the terminal, and the need to manage congestion.”

The report said the cost could be compared to consumer spending on parking at hospitals, sporting venues and entertainment venues.

The report suggested consumers could use web-based apps to compare options to access airports, including Uber and taxis, before deciding to park on site to avoid being hit with “a nasty surprise”.

The Productivity Commission will deliver its final report to the Federal Government in June.

“We call it a valet parking robot because people just need to drop off their car at the entrance of the car park and then they can basically leave and catch a flight, but it’s doing more than just valet parking,” said Stéphane Evanno co-founded of the French robotics firm, quoted by The London Evening Standard.

Similar trials have been taking place across European airports in Paris, Düsseldorf and Lyon.

The UK’s Gatwick airport is graced by almost a million square meters of car parking spaces.

Split between a 300 km sq Northern terminal park and the even larger 500 km sq South terminal – the amount of parking for the busy London airport can be overwhelming.

Though retrieving a car from Gatwick Airport can be a long and arduous process without the help of a robot – it isn’t often you lose your car.

However in July 2017 holiday makers returning to the airport discovered that their cars had been lost. Private parking firm Gatwick First Parking went bust leading to over 120 cars being removed and left at sites across the South of England, and passengers up in the air as to where their rides had gone.
