Delta’s new app lets you track your bag from airplane to airport

Earlier this year, Delta introduced new RFID luggages tags to let airports and passengers more accurately track and identify bags.

Now, the airline has updated its app to take this feature one step further — letting users track their bags on their mobiles. “From the moment our customers drop off their bag, we want them to know we’re looking out for it every step of the way and working to take the stress out of flying,” said Delta’s SVP of airline operations Bill Lentsch in a press statement. More importantly, the company thinks RFID tags will lead to a 10 percent decrease in misplaced baggage.

The tracking isn’t as accurate as the GPS on your phone, and only updates your bag’s location when its RFID tag is scanned — say, when it comes off the plane or reaches a claim area. These locations appear as suitcase pins in the Delta app’s maps, and can be tapped on for more information. It’s not a perfect system, but it certainly offers more peace of mind than not knowing anything at all about your bag’s location. Delta says the RFID tracking is available in 84 airports in the US.
